Rail fence on the field that separated Seminary Ridge, where the Confederate forces concentrated, and Cemetary Ridge, one mile away. These rail fences, built without nails, presented huge problems to the Confederates as they marched, in ranks, the mile distance to the Union lines. The Confederates marched under fire, disassembled fences as they came to them, reformed ranks, and continued their march. The focus of the Confederate attack was the clump of trees you see along the skyline on the left. © 2006 Lawrence I. Charters
